Chief Minister Harish Rawat’s wife Renuka Rawat and former Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna’s son Saket Bahuguna figure in list of candidates announced by the Congress today for the Lok Sabha elections in Uttarakhand.
While Rawat’s wife has been fielded from Haridwar, represented by the Chief Minister in the past, Saket will contest from Tehri Garwhal, a constituency from where his father had won the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
The third candidate finalised by Congress is senior Minister in the State government, Harak Singh Rawat, who will contest the Pauri Garwhal seat represented by Satpal Maharaj, who recently switched over to the BJP from Congress.
The Valley of Flowers National Park in Uttarakhand, which has been closed to the public after the mid-June flash floods, is unlikely to be opened this year due to lingering construction work.
The only bridges that connect the outside world with the valley were washed away in the floods and are still not reconstructed.
According to officials in-charge of the reconstruction, the work is very unlikely to be completed this year due to inclement weather.
Only eight pilgrims have registered for road travel towards Kedarnath this year. Nearly 13 lakh had visited Kedarnath and Badrinath last year, during the Char Dham Yatra.
Rattled by last year's devastation, only 77 devotees have opted for the chopper service for Kedarnath this year.
With the Char Dham Yatra, the backbone of Uttarakhand's economy, scheduled to kick off in the first week of May, it is clear that the state is set to lose hundreds of crores in revenue.
The Char Dham Yatra used to have over 2 crore visitors through the pilgrimage season. It fueled the economy of Uttarakhand, triggering money circulation in the form of taxi rides, hotel bookings, chopper rides and road taxes.
In an embarrassing security breach, a 21-year-old 'mentally disturbed' youth from Punjab snuck into the highly fortified Indian Military Academy campus by scaling its boundary wall late on Friday.
The youth, Gunwant Singh, was, however, caught by soldiers on night patrol duty when he was hiding in some bushes on the sprawling academy campus at around 11 PM, police said.
On being caught, Singh, a resident of Sumaan village in Sangrur district of Punjab, was instantly taken into military custody and interrogated at length by all the central and state intelligence agencies.
